wtf? this was ONLY televised on a cable channel? what's going on? and what was up with the setting? the crowd was all dark, retro maybe? they said something about TNT being the home of the NBA playoffs, why would the nba put their stuff exclusively on cable? i'm lost... |
|
Does that mean some people actually do still care about the NBA? |
|
All I know is that everyone of the players looked miserable as they were announced as all stars to come to the court in the opening "show" ..... the only one who smiled was Michael Jordan .... everyone else looked like they were going to their death |

keep paying ridiculous salaries to barely literate people who have been mollycoddled since their young teens and that is the garbage you get, which is why I have not watched even a portion of one NBA game since the playoffs of 2000. |

JHC I believe the demise of the NBA came when Kevin Garnett came out of high school straight to the NBA and had success. Not only that, his pathetic lucrative contract has made a mockery of the NBA. Of course before KG there was Glen Robinson begging for tons of money. I think the NBA needs more college educated players from the middle class and not a bunch of gangstas hoopin' it up. |

You know what the main flaw in all of your complaints is? People are paying the money for these athletes to recieve their high salaries. Their main incomes, however, come from advertising. |

oh yea, the dumped, there are like probably 200 members in NBA, i have probably seen 20 commercials or advertisements with NBA players in them. And those people all have managers who do all of the work for them. |

First off, I can tell you unequivocably that there are very few people in the NBA who can be characterized as smarter than the average person on this site. They have not figured out a way to make money. New arena gets built: Cost, say 150-200 million dollars. The money comes from either taxes, general revenue funds, or lottery. The team does not pay. Then the way the salaries are treated is another problem. Sports teams do not treat the players' salaries the way ordinary businesses treat salaries. They are allowed to depreciate them the same way a business does with equipment! This means a portion of the salaries are then deductible! Finally, businesses are allowed to deduct the expense of tickets, usually 100 percent of the cost. |

thanks JHC for the tax information, i did not know that; those rules are pretty pathetic. but in a certain way help define what an athlete is today: an object in which executives view they can make a huge profit, a fixed, depreciatable asset. and yeah, if i had the athletic talent a lot of those guys had i'd sure and hell would try and use it to get the most money i get, but this isn't a new or difficult concept like calculus can be, this is COMMON SENSE. and who really pays for the executives/athlestes multimillion dollar homes and extravagant lifestyles? the average hard working middle class person. everytime you drop 50 bucks on a seat and 5 dollars for a beer and 4 dollars for a hot dog or whatnot. sports are great, for sports sake, but the commercialization of a great thing just ruins it. |

additionally politicians love this whole concept because it gives governments the chance to put large construction projects up for bid, which means donations! Then the other reason they love it is that fans do not realize how much of their money spent on food concessions actually are taxes. Normal sales taxes are not the only ones spent when buying concessions. It is not unusual for a soda at a football or baseball game to be FOUR dollars--outrageous! The concessionaire is blamed for the high price, but here is how that four dollars might be broken down: Instead of the usual sales tax, taxes will account for as much as seventy cents of that four dollars! Then, a lot of the actual sports franchises get a cut of all sales, almost always, then because almost all pro teams now play in government funded buildings, the salaries of the employees making the stupid fast food are much higher than say at McDonald's which starts everyone off at minimum wage. The reason? The Prevailing Wage Laws. Everyone gets a cut and the fan just gets cut! |

I used to be a Knicks fan...used to be. I am no longer a fan, not because they were good and now they suck, but because their ownership keeps insisting that they can win with overpriced veterans (Mark Jackson, Erik Strickland, Antonio McDyess, Clarence Weatherspoon, etc.). Instead of trading Hilario (I don't remember his first name) to Denver for McDyess, the knicks should've held onto him because he's young, he's talented, and he's having a pretty good year so far! The Knicks will never win an NBA championship as long as the Dolans insist on trading away youngsters for overpriced, overrated veterans who simply can't get the job done anymore. |
