...I'm convinced there's something wrong with me. Everyone in the world loves these fuckers, the music press is kissing their asses non-stop and they're selling records like nobody's business...

...yet to me they sound throughly fucking retarded. Help me, please.

I'm kind of biased against this band because a newspaper in MI held a contest for the top 10 unsigned bands in MI and TWS finished 1st and my brothers band finished 8th and i can't stand TWS, i dont see the appeal, i mean, what the hell is that guy singing?

i'm with you chris.

i mean.. TWS are alright. they're nothing new or particularly original, and certainly not the saviours of music that all the music press make them out to be. so why they get all this attention is beyond me.

letting the music press's affection for a band make you hate them is just as stupid as following the press blindly.

His point wasn't to say he doesn't like them because the press does. Im pretty sure he was saying that to make the point that he doesn't understand WHY the press loves them so much.

Maybe it's because I haven't listened to any of the stuff off of Elephant, but from what I heard from the last album, I really don't think the White Stripes are anything special. It's funny how they got a lot of press for being a duo, but what about Local H? They were a duo long before The White Stripes came out. That chick drummer sucks, in my opinion, so basically the band is the guitar player.

I might just be messed up, but I'm starting to lose respect for some rock critics. I never have really liked Radiohead, and I never saw why rock critics drooled over them. Meh, whatever.

I have no opinion of them but Conan seems to like them. From 4/22-4/25 he's going to have them on his show as the musical guest.

AJ: What have you got in your CD changer right now?
Kevin Hearn: I'm listening to a spoken word CD called, "Twelve Different Ways to Make Blueberry Muffins".
Audience: *laughs*
Steven Page: You laugh now, but track nine is so heavy.
Ed Robertson: I came into the back and said, "Kev, whaddya listenin' to?" and he looked up with tears in his eyes and said, "Baking!"

Hate em. I have an ill feeling everytime I look at their picture. I think they are into evil things...

I didn't understand the hype either when i listened to "white blood cells..." but wow, "De Stijl" is an awesome album- there's a whole lot more piano overall, and it's just a lot easier to get into. I haven't heard "Elephant" yet, but 7 nation army is pretty addicting...

I think Elephant might possibly be their greatest album to date.

I'll sum up my thoughts here.

It is unfair to group them into the whole overhyped "the" bands (not saying anyone is here) and if you are, you're a moron. They rock and Elephant is so far one of the greatest albums of 2003 not including new Radiohead.

In my opinion, of course.

I went to see Ben Folds live once. Don’t ask me why. But I did. Anyways, the crowd at that show was fucking scary and weird. I felt like I was at a parent teacher meeting where everyone was drinking. Yeah nothing beats about 900 dorks singing “Brick” along with Ben Folds.

I ignored the White Stripes for a good long time, unfairly lumping them into the category of retro-punk bands such as the Strokes and the Hives, whom I hated. Then I saw them on Saturday Night Live last year, and was smitten. I bought White Blood Cells and listened to it non-stop. De-Stihl is an amazing album as well, much different than WBC. Elephant, although I haven't completely digeted it yet, is pretty damn great as well.

Ryan Adams said they were the saviors of rock and roll. I'd have to say I'd agree with his sentiment. There's so much shit on the radio, as far as rock goes. The White Stripes do so much with only 2-3 instruments, it's amazing.

And it's no wonder they topped the Michigander band list, frankly. It floored me to find out they were from Michigan, considering most Michigan local music is completely derivative and completly fucking sucks. It was nice to hear a band that was trying for something more than radio play.

Well I did. And that's the musical movement they were lumped into. They are more than that I know. But at the core of it, they're retropunk.

And I forgot the worst of the worst: The Vines. I frigging hate those guys.

I dunno what it's like over there, but here in the UK the music press seems to have a real hard on for bands that are just a guitarist and a drummer (porr bass players!) - cue the Ravonettes et al - I dunno, I wasn't saying I hate them because of the amount of press hype they get, although I'm not sure it's deserved and there's definitely a pack-hunting mentality to the music press - okay, so it's not new, but every now and again a band emerges that can just walk on water, can do no wrong and nobody in the music press seems to question whether they're actually that good or not, know what I mean? Okay, so you can ascribe some of it to bitterness ;) But seriously, I just don't see what the fuss is all about with these guys... maybe I'm too old, although I'd hate to think at 25 I was past it - maybe I'm just in denial :)) Anyway, rant over... just don't get me started on the Hives or the Vines or the Datsuns ...

I personally try and hear all music as I like it, not the music press, because they can seriously destroy any integrity some bands have. The White Stripes, I got into on my own and I'm quite glad I did. Its great when a band is hyped, but then there's always backlash. I dont follow the hype or the backlash.

I'm not accusing anyone here of being mindless press followers, but take into account that when you do say "I dont understand what all the hype is", the band dont make the hype, the press do. Its all good. Sham on, peoples!

Show me the mosh pit!
