Piano Singer/Songwriter Looking to Move to CA

So I'm getting fed up with life here in Madison, WI and when I get done with school next May, I'm taking the first plane to the west coast. I want to know if any of you west coast peeps out there know of a good area for a young piano singer/songwriter can live to try to start a BFF-style band (piano, bass, and drums) and try to get noticed.

You are crazy! Moving here to CA to start a music career. You had better get signed to a big label within a month. The ridiculous cost of living will turn you into a writhing mealworm in no time...run run away!!!

ah yes, the cost of living, i'm well aware of this. i'm going to be graduating with a degree in speech/language pathology. one of professors say that CA schools will hire me over the phone to be a speech therapist at their school. so i figure that i go for the CA school that's gives me the most $$$ and moonlight as a musician. if my pipe dream of being a musician works out, then i'll quit being a speech therapist. if not, then i'll get do the music thing for fun.
