I'd pay for an mp3 before I'd pay for a cd any day.

On top of being way more convenient than going to a record store, and cheaper, the artists make a higher percentage off of each sale... so you're supporting the artist more by buying off of iTunes than the actual cd.

I'd like to do iTunes, but I don't have speakers for my computer (and the headphone cord is only so long), my CD burner doesn't work, and I don't have a portable machine that plays mp3s... I barely have a CD player. Plus, I'm unemployed and download songs in ringer form on my cell phone because I get free downloads. *shrug*

That's a little misleading. Unless the artist is an independent working with Itunes, they are still signed to a record label and that label still gets a cut as proportionately large as it would have been on a CD sale.

Yes, both the artist and the label make more money selling mp3s than they do selling albums, but that's only because the cost of delivery is cheaper. In other words, they make more because mp3 downloads are horribly overpriced. The label and the artist just divy up the extra cash that would have gone to the guys who press and transport the CDs, at the same rate that they divide all their profits, instead of giving it entirely to the artist or passing the savings on to the consumer. There's nothing particularly noble about that.

They're still getting more than they would by buying a cd... so my statement still holds true

It is the same percentage... but when you take the costs of producing cd's, shipping and stocking, that same percentage turns into a higher amount

I disagree with this...

You can buy the Ben Folds Five self titled album on iTunes for $9.99... that same album sells for $13.99 at Amazon or $14.99 at BestBuy... so how does that make the mp3's overpriced, since it's $4-5 cheaper?

You don't get the case or booklet? Most people I know put their cd's in a cd book anyways, so the booklet and case is worthless. So why not save $5 and buy it on iTunes?

i think i should have just taken my dollar and lit it on fire....that would have been much more fun....

Ben should have made this a hidden track on the album....it just doesnt seem to work in my opinion

Because the labels make more money selling you 10 bucks of mp3s than they do selling you a 15 dollar CD. They turn a higher profit per "album", and they're selling you less than they did before: inferior audio quality, no book or case, and duplication restrictions. Itunes may be cheaper than buying CDs, but if the labels were happy to make only the same amount of money off of mp3s as they do off of CDs, the mp3s would be a lot cheaper than they are.

I mean, whatever, it's not like I'm arguing you should boycott itunes or anything. The labels can charge whatever they want, it's their music and their choice. I'm just saying it's no act of musical activism to use itunes... it's no more artist friendly or any less of a scam than anything else in the recording industry.

Yes it is... the labels make more, but so do the artists. Granted, it's not a lot more... but they do make more

It would be cool to have this track on digital wax, but if iTunes is the only way I can get it, I'll pay 99 cents American for it. I usually go to iTunes if I want one track anyway. I wouldn't buy a whole album on it, because I'd rather have a whole album professionally pressed with liner notes and shit.

Yes he is, in regards to saying the labels make more per sale... because they do. But the artists do as well. The percentages are the same... there's just fewer deductions because you don't have the costs of producing an actual cd, so they both make more money off of each sale

I'd rather have a whole album professionally pressed with liner notes and shit.

Some stuff I would too... I buy all my Ben albums... but for 90% of the artists I want to listen to, I just buy the cd and then put it in a cd book anyways, so the case and liner notes are pretty much worthless to me.

But it's the percentages that are important. If they aren't any different then.. well, it's no more amazing that Ben is making more money selling through itunes than it would if he just raised the price of his CDs.

Drew, I don't know you figured that I think the record industry "owes me something," because I think I'm just as sick of hearing people demonize them as you are. But I'm equally sick of hearing those same people then talk about using itunes like they are striking a blow for artist rights and "sticking it to the man", because that's silly. If you don't happen to like the way labels divide profits between themselves and their artists, you should know that itunes is still exactly the same deal. The only reason the artist gets any more is because everyone gets more, and the only reason everyone gets more is because the labels set the prices of mp3s higher than they need to be so that they turn a proportionately higher profit than do CDs.

But it's the percentages that are important

I'll give you 10% of a hamburger or 10% of $1,000,000... the percentages are the same, but you get more out of option 2.

Same here... the percentages are the same, but everybody makes more on the digital media, just because there are fewer costs.

I'm not at all trying to say people shouldn't buy cd's... just saying that artists (as well as labels) make more on digital sales

I'm also not trying to say iTunes is "sticking it to the man", because you're right, labels do make more... as you said, everyone gets more. I have no problem giving the labels an extra $.25 if the artist is making more too... because either way, I get the same music at a lower price (Because I don't particularly care to have the printed cd's or booklets). Some people, like Sean, like the books and printed cd's, so iTunes isn't a good solution for them.

If you want to talk about sticking it to the man... cdbaby is the way to go. Getting $8 back on a $12 cd sale... that's the way to go

The english voice on the track is Ben's australian drummer Lindsay Jamieson. Check out a live video clip from the Oklahoma City show below... and i'm sorry for the screaming in advance.

yeah, i have two things to say.

#1: i'm glad itunes exists if only for the sole purpose to help ben out.

#2: i will never EVER buy a song from itunes. why, you ask? awful, awful audio quality. no option to buy a good version. if they changed that policy i might think about reconsidering.

Audiophiles drive me fucking crazy. What, are your speakers made out of LIGHT? I've heard awful audio quality. It's called AM Radio. What iTunes sells is very comperable to CD Quality.

esrever, it was just the way you said it wasn't anymore of a scam than "anything else" in the music industry. You imply that the entire industry is a scam. I don't think it is. I think that attitude is along the lines of the attitude that the industry has somehow wronged us by charging what they want to charge. WE'RE the one giving them the profit margin. We're the ones buying what they sell. If anyone is to blame for the way the music industry is, it's the customer.

I really do not understand how anyone can tell the difference between a 128kbps AAC and 44.1 CD quality. Seriously, I listen through headphones and speakers and can't tell. And I have really good hearing. Mind you, I can tell the difference with mp3s, especially at lower than 192kbps, but AAC? Come on now.
