Mmm... pizza! I'm eating a wrap with a burger-thing in it. Not bad, but I'm having to hide the mustard from my roomate because he takes it to the fridge in his room and uses it all and never brings it back. And it's the expensive organic stuff, too!

How long have I been sleeping
How long have I been drifting alone through the night
How long have I been dreaming I could make it right
If I closed my eyes and tried with all my might to be the one you need

Booo, I don't even know what's in pepperoni and I dealt with that stuff everyday for years. I do kinda miss eating sliced ham off the make table, though...

Uncle Tupelo, in particular Anodyne. It's the pretty much the pinnacle of alt-country. Early Old 97's albums are pretty good, too. Hitchhike to Rhome and Wreck Your Life are their countriest sounding records, but Too Far to Care is freaking packed. I can send you some samples if you like, Fronk.

These may not all be considered "Alt-Country," but you may like them:
Whiskeytown
Golden Smog
Gram Parsons
John Prine
Robert Earl Keen
Son Volt

Way to be on it, assington. My thoughts exactly.

I remember the days when this thread would be full of Old 97's/Rhett Miller mentions. Goddamn.

Old 97's haven't been very country lately, though. Not like when they started, at least. Rhett Miller sure as hell isn't country.

I'm shocked I haven't seen The Jayhwks name come up yet. One of the definitive alt-country artists. Check out their major label debut - Hollywood Town Hall. Then you can rifle through the rest of it. One of my very favorite bands.

I also would second the Uncle Tupelo. Anodyne is a classic of the genre.

And if you wanna kick it old school - Jerry Jeff Walker. Back in the day we called it "progressive counry".

i agree with a lot of the people/bands that have been mentioned, but i don't think anyone has said anything about lucinda williams yet, and damn is she good. "car wheels on a gravel road" and "essence" are my two favorites. patty griffin as well, sometimes more folky but her voice is possibly the most beautiful voice i've ever heard. some of my all time favorites already listed:

GRAM PARSONS (precursor to alt country and amazing)
uncle tupelo
wilco (early stuff)
the jayhawks
john prine (also a precursor to alt country)
son volt
whiskeytown

Gram Parsons

i love him. not as much as ryan adams, but hes awesome.

i just got some great jayhawks live stuff off of soulseek. wilco is a great recommendation as well. lucinda williams is legendary in my mind, shes one of the few women artists i acutally like.

so yeah, ditto to what everyone else has already said.

Lucinda Williams-Car Wheels on a Gravel Road was voted the best album of the genre by that one alt-country mag. Great album, I'm also way into World Without Tears, her 2003 album. Definitely check out The Jayhawks. Kathleen Edwards and Tift Merritt are great. Definitely check out The Flying Burrito Brothers' first album, The Gilded Palace of Sin. The Man, Neil Young, has some alt-country-ish stuff. His new one, Prairie Wind, is great and definitely on the country end of things. Late 60's Dylan is def. alt-country-ish. Check out Exile on Main Street by The Stones. Not really alt-country but great American music, by 5 British honkies no less. That's all I've got. Hope that helps.

Drive by Truckers are worth checking out. How could I have forgotten to mention Emmylou Harris? Check out her 95 album, Wrecking Ball.
