to be able to read shit on the net? For example I wanted to read an article that was e-mailed to me to read and when I clicked on the link sure enough you have to register. Shit.

Why? Is it for ad money?

It was a trade magazine e-mail that effectively said "Hey! Read this great article about boring X-ray industry shit!" and I guess I fell for it.
