I have to admit to some bias, as I've been around too many theatre kids and have grown to loathe contemporary musicals (ie. 90s onwards). For instance, Singing In The Rain et al are fine with me.

Raiders is so great, especially the ending.

There's a big difference to me between visuals and... pretense to me, my opinions on Tim Burton vs. someone like Wes Anderson illustrate this

That's a fair point. I feel like the same part of my brain appreciates WA (I know you're not a fan) as Burton, but I also sense the difference you mean and I feel like my favorite movies of both are the ones that have as much story as attention to prod design, pretentious or no.

yeah it's such a different kind of musical with a totally different sort of sensibility. You don't get so much of the saccharine theatricality with those movies. When you look at American in Paris there's a really legitimate romanticism. Or with SITR and The Wizard of Oz there's so much there in terms of story, and they age so well with their comedy and cynicism and such. The songs in those movies are not "showtunes" or w/e -- they make sense outside their context -- which I think helps an awful lot.

I do think one of the virtues of Nightmare Before Christmas is that it is a very romantic movie -- see the end, which I think is surprisingly effortless about it -- and also that it's a children's movie that has no real moral. Even the Pixar movies, which I am crazy about, always contain some message or another, and I miss when Bugs Bunny could blow shit up and offer no redeeming social value. The only discernible moral of NBC is not to mix up your holidays, whatever that means, and I guess something or other about nonconformity but that's all right.

Well... to be honest, it isn't even having seen a lot of them... just hearing them go on and on and on and on about them and filling their iPods with songs from musicals and breaking out in them randomly... haha. But things like Rent, and Sweeney Todd was another one I was sick of (well before the movie was even thought of... I plan on giving it a chance though) just for hearing the name too much, and there's some other one called, like, The Last Ten Years or something and... I dunno. I've blanked a lot of the titles out.

The Last Ten Years

The Last Five Years is actually perfectly decent... the songs in that actually work as plot devices.

yeah Amy was really into a lot of those. The Last Ten Years, Chess, Tick Tick Boom, A Man of No Importance are a few that I can remember.

YES! That's basically it... and then to be surrounded by people who actually re-enact that saccharine or just... carry themselves by it... it's only something I can take in smaller doses. That's just me.

As an actor I'm familiar with a lot more musical theatre than I'd like to be, and I generally agree with the sentiment that the modern musical lacks in substance in terms of how songs relate to plot. However, don't discredit every single new musical out there... there are a few that work brilliantly. The Last Five Years (which I actually do like), Falsettos... you gotta dig.

I dig what you're saying, JL. I just need to get the "musical fans" out of my system first. Sort of like the way sometimes people can ruin a band for you that you haven't heard yet.

I absolutely agree that the Wicked/Rent/Avenue Q fans are out of their damn minds with their obsessions... a lot of these newer musicals out there are so saccharine it's sickening.

So what kind of acting do you do, Acelze? Stage or screen? Small-time or professional?

Stage, basically whatever I can find. I'm young and in college, so I haven't done too much professional yet.

I did a bit of local back in the suburbs in Sydney but because I was working weekends it restricted my choices a bit. I only ended up in musicals. I'd like to sniff out the Adelaide scene once I get myself settled into uni.

It's tough to make a living off of it, and that's basically what I'm banking on. I'm thankful for these college years.
