I concur on Hard Day's Night. |
richard lester is an amazing director. aside from his beatles movies The Knack and Petulia are outstanding, innovative, unique films. |
I didn't enjoy him stealing Donner's credit on Superman II though, so i have a grudge. |
wasn't the movie almost completely reshot? plus it's Richard Donner, the best thing he did was a couple of Twilight Zones so who the hell cares. |
plus unless Lester (who apparently was a producer on the movie) was the one who personally fired Donner there's not much sense in blaming him, unless you think Victor Fleming deserves scorn for "stealing" George Cukor's credit on Gone with the Wind. |
I'm under the impression the film was entirely shot, and Lester came in and reshot some scenes and oversaw the editing process. Donner's version was released recently and i don't think it's too different, which leads me to believe Lester is a credit stealer. |
just finished new world. good movie. christian bale made it worth waiting for imo. |
Lester is a poopiehead. |
I like Conspiracy Theory too. Anyway I've never seen Superman II so I have no idea how much of it is Lester but you would really enjoy his movies I'm guessing since you seem to have taste. I just saw Petulia last year and found it a revelation imo. But A Hard Day's Night is the masterpiece for sure. |
I havent seen that yet. The ignored Malick film, thanks for reminding me. |
also Donner says 25% of the Lester cut is his. IDK what Lester says. |
who cares anyway, if it doesn't have richard pryor in it it's not a real superman film. |
The New World is good but kind of anticlimactic. It looks gorgeous but I miss the economy of his first two movies. |
I'll check em out, Dusto. What kind of venue... that is to say, thematically... um... What are his films about? |
HAHA nice Barton Fink reference (I can finally get those yay) |
I was worried nobody would get that. It's quickly becoming one of my favourite films. It's so perfect. |
they're surreal. balletic editing. usually very funny, kind of eccentric. The Knack was very obviously an influence on Wes Anderson and especially Michel Gondry. Petulia isn't as widely known but it's really beautiful and surreal, it's about an affair between a dental surgeon and a much younger woman and film guides usually credit it as a comedy but it's not, it's very mournful. George C. Scott is insanely good in it. |
It's great but it kind of bewildered me at first, I saw a good interpretation of it online that made it a lot more sensible 2 me. |
I haven't seen Barton Fink yet :( |
They sound right up my alley, i'll hunt them down on the way home tonight if i have time. |
BOOKSIE!! SEE IT IMMEDIATELY!! |
yeah i put it on the list at grant's suggestion the other night. |
Well basically I am just referring something Ebert said in his review about it being analagous to the rise of Nazism; the whole thing about the liberal elite pretending to care about the common man while failing to truly listen to their grievances, allowing fascism to take hold unnoticed, etc. |
(possible spoiler alert idk w/e) |
haha now i'm going to feel all bad if you rent those movies and hate them. |
yeah the ending is nuts. it feels like a david lynch film almost. |
*SPOILER* |
It's rare that i ever hate a movie. I think some movies aren't very good, but there's very few movies i hate. |
I hate films with a specific and immoral agenda, like this recent australian film Bra Boys, which tried to glorify racist beach gangs as just good ol' true blue aussie boys trying to serve thier community and getting by with what they've got. I hate that movie so much i never even saw it!!! |
You have that filmmaker mind. |
