a crane is what filmmakers use for overhead shots when a helicopter isn't available

My honest answer is I don't know. I could spend days reading all the literature I could find about it and probably wouldn't be any closer to actually KNOWING. I do put some level of trust in people like Al Gore and Michael Shermer who seem to be upfront about it without too much of a sense of unproductive hysteria, but aside from that, SO MUCH of what is said for and against seems politically motivated. But I think the possibility is too grave and prominent to be ignored, so I pretty much side with the Incovenient Truth crowd and say let's do something d00dz.
