David Lynch is married to a Sweeney that is in fact related to me (although I don't know how).

Oh, and if you notice, she starred in some pornos back in the 70s. (that was funny when I revealed that to my dad, who knows her but didn't know that).

but i mean, that's how people saw it, so why watch the movie first?

i mean, like with the series "flowers in the attic", the reader finds out about the lives of these children, THEN the prequal is the last in the series, and its about the abusive grandmother.
sometimes it makes things more intersting, iMO
you get to know the situation, and then find out why characters are the way that they are

I never watched the show, but the consensus is 1st season = great, 2nd season = terrible.

All I remember about the movie is a guy eating some vomit.

I'm not kidding, you should see my bathroom right now. If there's anyone out there who wants to eat vomit, I believe I can adequately provide a meal or two.

I recommend watching the series before Fire Walk With Me because otherwise FWWM won't make much sense and also watching that first would spoil a bunch of stuff from the series. I don't know if you're watching this on VHS or DVD, but the DVD set of season 1 that was released in 2001 (and still no season 2 yet, though there's a rumor that the whole thing will be released next year) doesn't contain the 2 hour (with commercials) pilot episode. There's a standalone Twin Peaks movie which is the original pilot with a tacked on ending that wraps everything up so that it would make sense if the pilot wasn't picked up (this is also how it's presented in the VHS set - there's more about this here: http://www.twinpeaks.org/faqeps.htm#e10). That page also includes information on where the original pilot ends and the tacked on ending begins in case you want to watch it how it originally aired:

- About 90 minutes into the movie, after Sheriff Truman
introduces Cooper to Lucy's nightly donut spread, and the
jail scene with James, Bobby, and Mike, there is a scene
where the Sheriff visits Josie.

"It must have happened right around this time yesterday,"
Truman says to Josie.

"I'm afraid," Josie says.

Next there is a shot of the traffic light, blowing in the
breeze.

- Stop the movie at the next scene where we see Laura's
mother sitting by herself on the sofa, smoking. Up until
this point, the movie and broadcast pilot are identical.

Fire Walk with Me is one of the most quotable movies I've ever seen.

"If I had a nickel for every cigarette your mom smoked...I'd be dead."

And just what is the "it" that is to him "up" and which he can, perhaps, "handle"?
