should that change the customer service expectations?

It changes the person's ability to get a better job since they're largely on casual hours, inexperienced and unskilled.

Imagine him explaining that to a girl in 20 years. "Yeah, my mom was a coke addict and she cut it off. Hey, at least I can walk straight!"

You've just beaten the stuffing out of three preppies and given away the girl--but before the day is through, you'll take enough drugs to kill a horse. Now, it's Miller Time!

that makes sense, but I also don't know that this means someone should give crummy service...especially if the goal is not to work a crummy job. Plus, if the person is a teenager, they probably don't NEED a good paying job.

Plus, if the person is a teenager, they probably don't NEED a good paying job.

when I was at the deli, a recurring problem we had was students who didn't actually need their job. they were in college and most of them were kind of being paid for along the way by their parents, or something. in any case, they were there basically to get money for idle spending. I have a friend I worked with there who got the job simply so that he could buy a top of the line synthesizer. anyway, the common problem with these people (not students as a whole, I'm saying the ones for whom the job isn't essential, and I assume it's a problem at other places as well) was that they didn't CARE. they didn't do good work, they didn't care what the customers thought of them. they came in and fucked off. because they were getting degrees and wouldn't have to worry about this shit down the line.

usually if the job got a little stressful they'd quit, more often than not without notice.

and now I know a depressing number of them have their degrees and can't get non-shitty jobs with them.

You don't develop a work ethic in the classroom.

More that, the job's are largely shite, they're being paid as little as possible to do them and there's plenty of similar jobs around. What's the incentive to do anything except the least amount of work possible?

I think having a good manager affects the shittiness of a job, or at least for me. Sometimes it got irritating because they were always around, but since then I've come to appreciate competent management.

that's kinda self-defeating. it seems like one step away from "why do anything?" if you don't want to do work, the pay isn't good enough to justify it, etc., WHY DO YOU HAVE THE JOB TO BEGIN WITH?

gb: nothing if you're a fat, immature, irresponsible asshole. the agreement you make when you take a job is "you pay me and i'll work for you," not "you pay me and i'll try to do as least as possible because i'm lazy." what's more, most jobs are in some sort of team environment, and NO ONE likes to work with someone that isn't putting as much into it as they should. haven't you ever had to work with someone that isn't pulling their weight? it's REALLY annoying, right? unless you are that someone for everyone else...

if you don't like what you're being paid, find another job; i'm sure your employer would give a glowing recommendation.

WHY DO YOU HAVE THE JOB TO BEGIN WITH?

Because you need money to survive? If jobs treat their employees like crap why should they expect anything but crap employees? Why would you try and exceed at at job that has no future?

paying minimum wage is not "treating employees like crap." the laborer AGREES to take a minimum wage job in exchange for their work, it is a freely made transaction. if you can't understand that, then quit and start suckling the government teet for unemployment like all the other worthless, lazy bottom-feeders.

exactly...we have tons of high school kids who get jobs that stay up late so they can have a car or new speakers in it. It's not like they're even saving up for college or helping the family out with that money. I could understand if it were the latter.

paying minimum wage is not "treating employees like crap." the laborer AGREES to take a minimum wage job in exchange for their work, it is a freely made transaction.

iawtp. Nobody FORCES anyone to take a crummy job (unless maybe it's one of those weird welfare to work programs). People have a choice as to what job they want. If it's their choice to work in a low paying job, then they have to live with it. It's not a blank check to act like a shithead. If your employer doesn't value you, and you're worth valuing, go somewhere that does.

If you can't find a job, get some training or an education or some experience. Don't expect people to beg you to let them pay you.

Remember the article about today's generation being more narcissistic than previous? This is what I think the article was driving at. On the way to work I heard a great bit on NPR. It's part of the "This I Believe" segment and a 15 year old girl wrote in to talk about duty. She basically said that her family, teachers, etc. had invested too much in her to not give life her best shot. I was so happy to hear that. THAT belies the underlying meaning of this discussion. It's not about minimum wage. With very few exceptions, most human beings are endowed with enough smarts and faculties to allow them to be fairly successful. If they choose not to develop that, for whatever reason, then they need to accept it...instead of complaining about what they are owed.

I'm all for a helping hand when you're down, but if you choose to stay down in spite of that hand, then enjoy looking up.

I usually like Thursdays a lot. The weather change and sunshine is to schoolkids what the moon is to a werewolf.

Sundays tick me off.
