Ben has been my favorite artist for quite a few years and I was thinking about the #1s in my listening career.

1991-1994: Beatles
1995-1997: Dave Matthews (Just started Ben)
1997-1999: Beastie Boys (Liking Ben more)
1999-2000: Barenaked Ladies (Solidifying Ben)
2000-2007: Ben Folds (Opening to alternative sources of music)

I think I am nearing the end of it, not because I dislike Ben, but because Andrew Bird is simply so much more talented and unique. I've given it a lot of thought and considered staying, but Ben...I'm breaking up with you...for now.

not a bad thread, something i've thought about too.

i'd say i didn't have a favorite artist until high school, so i'll start there.

1994-1995: metallica
1995-1998: counting crows
1998-2000: barenaked ladies
2000-2005: ben folds/five
2005 forward: none, but if i had to pick something, it'd probably be some kind of a 7 way tie between bishop allen, andrew bird, the decemberists, the shins, beulah, rilo kiley, saturday looks good to me

1986-2001 - The Beatles (I had no choice)
2002-2003 - The Beatles (I realized what was up and made the choice)
2003-2005 - Ben Folds (Interest probably peaked in the anticipation for SFS and then began to wane)
2005-2007 - Wilco presides over all, but I have gone through multiple-month phases of Built to Spill, The Hold Steady, Neutral Milk Hotel and Pavement.

I considered putting Ween, although the phase of obsession lasted less than the others.

I resent this comment.

Have you ever seen Ween live? They're one of about 5 bands I haven't seen live that I must.

1994-1995: metallica

This surprises me, but! I know a lot of people whose favorite band was Metallica when they were younger, and with every single one of them, you'd never guess that now.

I'd fill this out, but I was always bad at picking favorites.

Congratulations on your promotion.

88-92 Billy Joel (I’m a NY Jew, leave me alone)
92-94/5 Guns N’ Roses
95-Present Tom Waits but mixed with:
97-2001 Ben Folds Five
01-Present Clem Snide
03-Present NMH

82-83: Kenny Rogers
83-85: Michael Jackson
1986: CCR
87-88: Beastie Boys/Morrissey (Viva Hate)
88-93: The Beatles (which became my metric for music)
93-94: Guns n Roses/Metallica/Ice Cube
94-96: The Smashing Pumpkins
96-99: Radiohead/Oasis/Morrissey/Blur
99-00: Led Zeppelin/Pink Floyd

02-04: A rehash off all of the previous more or less plus Sublime, the White Stripes, and the Rolling Stones.

04-XX: Wilco/DCfC/Ben/The Shins/The Flaming Lips and a few others. This is when I met Webb and then you guys so I got turned on to a bunch of really great music I wouldn't know about otherwise. I'm a bit overwhelmed right now.

I resent this comment.

It was a true comment, it just kinda came out in a smart-ass way. And, yes I have seen Ween, they tie with the Flaming Lips as the best show I've ever seen. I'll be seeing both of them at Bongaroo this year too.

Pink Floyd is really growing on me lately. I've listened to Dark Side and Meddle like 6 times each this past week.

It surprises me too, in retrospect. I still have several friends who love Metallica, and whenever we go on road trips together, it inevitably becomes what we listen to simply because they like it, and i'm familiar enough with it to enjoy it.

Jesus123 I'm surprised The Divine Comedy isn't on your list.

"Is the president, as a devout Christian, aware of early church father Lactantius, the tutor of Emperor Constantine's son, and his justifying suicide for impending torture, or St. Jerome's justifying suicide in defense of chastity, and in 16th century Britain, the use by priestly permission of the holy stone?"

94-99 Toad the Wet Sprocket, Gin Blossoms, Counting Crows, BFF and better than Ezra
00-02 LIVE
03-05 This is when I kind of had my brain opened to the idea of there being good music out there besides the bands I listened to as a teenager- Wilco, Ben Kweller, Cat Power, Nick Drake, The Decemberists, Belle and Sebastian, Modest Mouse and Death Cab for Cutie
06-now Built To Spill, Calexico, Iron and Wine, Sufjan Stevens and some Bishop Allen every now and then.

what Drew said about Metallica

I jumped on the Metallica bandwagon full on when the black album came out.

Sure, I liked them before that but I didn't really listed to And Justice for All and Pastor of Muppets until after the black album. Now I think they're both their best works.

Nothing after that has done anything for me.

I like a handful of songs from load and reload, but none of it does a whole lot for me these days.

Grant is right. During many of those years, I harbored Ben as the lead, but it was sort of a lame duck marriage.

Here's a more accurate listing.

1991-1994: Beatles
1995-1997: Dave Matthews (Just started Ben)
1997-1999: Beastie Boys (Liking Ben more)
1999-2000: Barenaked Ladies/Radiohead (Solidifying Ben)
2000-2007: Ben Folds, but brief affairs with Divine Comedy, Nick Drake, Elliott Smith, and Eels
2007-????: Andrew Bird
