cause GTA has been popular for like 10 years for one thing, and for another, CHRIST DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHO PLAYS VIDEO GAMES?? it's kids who can't drive anyway, geeks who can't afford to drive, or affluent people who have better things to do than penetrate your WASP bubble (if they're not part of it themselves) (and i don't mean to imply anything about ur life, just speaking generally). besides every notion that media has an impact on violent crime is reactionary and wrong. it doesn't cause ppl to steal cars any more than DH Lawrence caused them to fuck outdoors (more than they would otherwise).

It just seems to me that playing a game and killing people is different than watching someone killed in a movie.

I was about to post on here and say that the last game I played was Grand Theft Auto.

The 1998 (?) original.

it's rated M anyway, meaning it's for adults. of course, kids will play it, just like kids watch porn and violent movies when they aren't supposed to, but that's not the movie's (or game's) fault.

I hear what you said, dustybooks.

I remember when, like 10 years ago, my boyfriend took me to the arcade and he was all nuts about this game called "silent scope" (if I remember correctly). It's where you held a fake shotgun and shot at people on the screen. It seemed to help him get out some anger.

In my day of pac-man and space invaders, it didn't seem so real.

And no, I really wasn't aware of who was playing videogames except for my nephew who's 14.

I think if you're playing video games and you can't tell the difference between them and real life you have a problem already that would be there even if the game had never been invented. but even if they did cause violence, and there is no reason whatsoever to believe that they or any media do, that's the price we pay for free expression imo.

and just so I don't seem biased, I am not a gamer. I generally lose interest in any video game after about 10 minutes, tops.

there are literally thousands of games exactly like that emaline. every arcade nowadays has dozens of them. (many of them have you shooting aliens instead of people tho.)

i suppose the video game world does seem a little weird and scary when you know nothing about it. (not trying to diss you w/ that, i'm being srs.)

Yeah, that's all I'm really saying - I have no clue about the gaming world and it does seem pretty scary to me. I appreciate the input, seriously. And thanks for not dissing me personally. I'm just trying to understand.

when I was younger I was a HUGE fan of Atari 2600, and I still have nearly every Atari game as a rom on my old Packard Bell pentium. i also loved a lot of computer games (Wolfenstein, Commander Keen, Doom, Myst, many others). I also had a Game Boy which was well used but Tetris doesn't count as a video game because it's UNIVERSAL, MAN. So basically I don't know what happened, for whatever reason I just can't sustain the addiction now, and really I would prefer not to, not because of any kind of condescension toward games or gamers but because I already have too much to do, in fact a bunch of things I should be doing right now but I'm on the fuckin org instead.

I had a gameboy like 15 years ago. I played Kirby's pinball on it. How much more girly can I get?

there's no questioning that it's a great game. i just feel like it's the most difficult of the whole series. for that, though, it's the most rewarding story-wise.

I never got past the 2nd dungeon of that game, I think. Totally hard. I'd download it for Wii if it was available so I could try again.

i still have it on a collectors disc, and someday, i'll replay it.

and yeah, it's pretty difficult, but it's also the closest i've ever come to completing a 3D zelda 100% (i got all the masks, and most of the hearts)
