I went to a Jesuit college, but that's my only Catholic experience.

I think my mom went through a heavily catholic period something like 10-12 years before I was born. both my brother and my sister were baptized during that time. but I don't know if that counts as background, I never had an inkling of it.

no actually, they were pretty cool. i mean i didn't like my parents any more when i was a teenager than anyone does. but before and after that they've been great.

I've never been to church and actually I think I just decided to start going every week, it's about time I rebelled against my bourgeois roots!!!!!!! thanks u for inspiring me

is this your honest thesis, scratch?

do you think any nonbeliever doesn't believe because, you know, they don't actually believe? or is it always the result of some odd adolescent freudian repression?

my dad was catholic. my mom is christian but not catholic. i've got nothing interesting or unusual to report as far as my interfamily dynamic goes. religion wasn't much of a flashpoint for us.

k. Just sayin' that I never met hardcore atheists til' bout 3 years ago when I moved to urban areas. They all had one thing in common. CATHOLICISM. (somewhere, somewhen) And if the kid hadn't experienced it, then the atheist parents had. It's all reactionary as far as I can tell. A hatred for something very real in one's own life that claims something is irrefutably true when that something is full of shit. The catholic church seems to produce alot of this. And, by judging all the scandals I've seen in the "church", I'd probably feel the same way if I was exposed to it.

i guess i don't undertand why your view isn't that the push churched these people away? seems the easiest, simplest explanation to me. no need to gussy it up with the weird freud stuff.

no that is my view. I just don't understand it b/c I have no experience with the catholic church. I'm certain the catholic church is a big fat farce. Christ (the man) did not preach about heirarchies and power. blahblahblahasdfjas;dfj. old news I know. But the catholic church is really weirdo imo.

yeah that's true, but in some ways it's nowhere near as odd as some protestant denominations. we never had anyone crying and holding their hands up to god and shit like that at any mass i attended. catholicism is odd, yes, but catholics are no odder than any other christians.
