I hope this isn't a joke. Since the 5, ben has had a hard time asserting himself without being completely pretentious. Silverman was a little better than Rockin the Suburbs about it, and now I think he has overcome himself almost completely with this new one.... he takes a lot of risks musically and they outweigh the dumb lyrics imo

I thought silverman was strong. the songs were linked thematically and lyrically and all that shit. there were some really beautiful moments in there as well. just because it wasn't clever doesn't mean it wasn't good.

I actually liked SFS too. I definitely thought it was the weakest thing of anything he's done, i still enjoyed it. That said, i'm glad we're not getting another songs for silverman album here.

btw, anyone think this leaked version of free coffee sounds a bit like jesusland musically? maybe just a tiny bit?

he went in a strange direction with silverman. it sounded like he wrote what people wanted him to write and it seemed cheesy. there was a 1 or 2 great songs in it. give judy my notice and bastard were pretty good i think, but i always skip over them on my ipod.

BD, i had a different take on silverman. in the EPs and rockin' the suburbs he's trying to be clever. in silverman its seems like he's trying his darndest to be earnest but there's still some residual smartassedness. agreed he's not always "clever" but it's part of his schtick so w/e... at least the music kills on this one (and in silverman, which is what redeemed it for me)
