I subbed all day and put up with so much middle school girl drama in the last 2 hours that I am physically exhausted. But now I have to go meet a group member so we can quickly slap together the last third of a a presentation we have to give at 5:30 because our other group member's mom is in the hospital, so he's been totally MIA.

But all I want to do is sit here and drink something with alcohol :(

five. FIVE! more than that really, but those five were having the drama.

I was really afraid one was going to punch one of the others. I told her to go bitch about it to the counselor, far away from the others.

Apparently group member's mom is super sick and in an out of town hospital, so so is he. This should be a fun presentation.

Not that I blame him. Stuff happens. I just hope out teacher cuts us some slack.

Think of it this way...in a year you will be worried about something else entirely and this won't even register as a memory

;)

My teacher was very nice. We don't present until next week. Then if our member can help out, cool, otherwise we have more time to readjust.

But isn't it harder to diffuse a situation like that when you know nothing about the kids in the middle of it?

I'm just sayin I win.

Dealing with middle school kids is difficult no matter if your a seasoned veteran or a sub walking in on nothing.

I had a student threaten to kill me the other day when I wouldn't let him in the building to put another kid in the hospital as he so eloquently threatened to do. The next day... he brought a knife to make good on his promise. We can't expel kids. He's coming back to my class eventually. I feel great about this.

Plus a lot of the emotional exhaustion came from really understanding where they were coming from. It's been awhile, but I clearly remember catty middle school drama land. It kind of makes me want to work with that age just to help them out. I know how sucky my teachers were with that stuff way back when.

yikes, rach! I've been lucky enough to not get called to the school this year where there were lots of knives. I was lucky enough last year to keep missing knife days.

Geez Rachael, that's pretty intense.

All these situations are intense.

I remember drama back then, but man, not this intense. I salute you all for fighting the good fight.

I'm glad it was only a knife this time and that the security team caught it at the door. We've had a few guns already this year. Usually, it isn't my students. This is just a kid who was put out of his home and has a lot of stuff going on and is having some gang issues with the kid next door to my room. I am not going to take it personally... if I did, I wouldn't be able to make it through the school day.

My point is... it's rough nowadays to work with troubled populations. We all will have our horror stories. We all just have to keep working on making it better and learning how to adjust and keep moving on.

I guess I'm just contrasting this to my middle school teaching experience here in Korea, where most of my "troubling experiences" are simply confusion between culture and language differences and the frustration that no one can understand you sometimes. The kids are pretty subdued, most likely to the fact that they have no free time throughout the day and study whenever they're awake, but nothing violent or anything. I did have to break up a fight one time, but it was pretty tame and the kids were small and thin and easy to control.

How's the teen suicide rate over there in Korea? It sounds a lot like the culture in japan.

so my kid was freaking out last night because she said some of her friends were going to do drugs. She was freaking out that my wife wouldn't leave her after school so she could stop them, ( and of course screaming that if those kids got hooked on drugs it was my wife's fault)

eventually, she calmed down and talked about it.
today she went in and talked to the admin staff about it, and name dropped some kid that should be 2 grades ahead, and actually suggested school wide locker and pocket searches. We have been promising her for 15 hours that no one would ever know she was involved, but that if she wanted to help stop her friends, that was the only way.

I'm kind of proud of how she pulled herself together and handled it.

we also told her that unfortunately, she will probably lose relationships with people close to her in life because of drugs, and there is really no stopping someone that's gone down that path. She thinks the power of HER is enough to control every situation.

It's hard to try to be honest and teach your kid about how people really are sometimes, while trying not to inject the cynicism you actually feel about it.

Aww...good for her! That takes guts.

I shouldn't have much drama today because I'm at a high school. Though I think I have 9th graders, so maybe.

good job on the daughter, tbone. i stopped a potential school shooting by ratting on someone once. but it turned out she didn't even have access to any guns. she did get expelled though.
