Well I'm Jim.
I could list a million bands here, and it might make me seem cool, or a total geek, or just a bit of a tosser, which I think would be missing the point.
Sure, I do care about things like the credibility and authenticity of music, but I think people (especially people who think of themselves as big music fans) sometimes forget that the music itself is far more important than who is making the music.
I always find it difficult to articulate exactly why I love music, but I'll try.
I like music that doesn't do things by halves.
If music is loud I want it to be rib shakingly, ear bleedingly, can be heard from space, moutain sized riffingly thunderous.
I love quiet music that's so quiet it's as if the instruments are whispering to you, and only you. A million people may own the CD, but when you listen to it, it's just you and them.
For me, fast music should be an exhilarating listen, almost physically exhausting to keep up with, whereas slow music should be so slow that you could recite short plays between the notes.
I love electronic music, as long as it's not pretending not to be. I hate digital pianos and synth strings, and I hate it when people program drums just because they can't be bothered getting a real drummer to play, as opposed to because they like the way they sound. I also find it frustrating when people dismiss electronic on the grounds that it's "not real music" and that "anyone can make it", because making (essentially) a machine connect to someone on an emotional level is immeasurably harder than strumming a few chords on a strat.
On the other hand, I love the it when music feels so organic that it's as if the notes themselves have been carved by hand.
I've not mentioned lyrics. That's because they're not important to me as the music itself. I know people who listen to music just for what it's saying, which is cool by me, and there are definitely some artists whose lyrics are as important (if not more so) than the music itself. There are some lyricists who can make me think, make me smile, laugh or cry, sometimes even all at once, but overall, I'd say I'm not overly interested. I do like good singers though.
Singers with personality. I like the way certain words sound coming out of certain people's mouths, but I think that's another matter again.
I think the musical holy grail to me, personally, is music that is accessible and melodic, whilst simultaneously being experimental and interesting, and yet still manages to connect on some emotional level. If it can do all that, and maybe even make you want to dance, then I'd say it's pretty much perfect.
At the end of the day, what I'm trying to say, is that what it comes down to is passion. As long as it's clear that the performer has put blood sweat and tears into the music, that they actually gives a shit about, then I, almost certainly, will as well.
